The term fractal was first coined by the Polish-born, French-American mathe- matician Benoît Mandelbrot in the mid 1970s (cf. at least Mandelbrot 1975; Stewart 2010). It comes from the Latin word fractus “which has the same root of fraction and fragment and means “irregular or fragmented” (cf. Mandelbrot 1982: 3, in Emmer 2012: 7). Furthermore “it is related to frangere which means to break" (cf. Mandel- brot 1982: 4, in Emmer 2012: 7). Intrinsic linearity of bakelite Resistive Plate Chambers operated in streamer mode

Abstract Resistive Plate Chambers have largely been used in High Energy Physics and Cosmic Ray research. In view of using this detector for calorimetry applications it is important to know the maximum measurable particle density, or its intrinsic linearity limit, which is tightly related to the dimension of the discharge region. In this paper we report the results of measurements performed at the Beam Test Facility (INFN National Laboratory of Frascati, Italy) where the intrinsic linearity of bakelite RPCs operated in streamer mode has been tested at different impinging particle densities.

Testing for non-linearity in an artificial financial market: a recurrence quantification approach

Abstract In this paper, earlier work on testing for non-linear dynamics on realizations from an artificial financial market is extended in two ways. On the one hand, Hinich’s bispectral test and White’s neural network test are computed. On the other hand, a recently developed methodology to test for hidden structures in data, inherited from Physics, is successfully applied on the realizations of the artificial market. Results among alternative tests are compared.

Electrooptic beam deflection with latex

The use of latex in electrooptic devices is proposed. The static non linearity coefficient is shown to be approximatively 200 times the optical one.
